I’m a sicilian-English. I was born in East London. I live mainly in Sicily. I graduated from the Sapienza Università di Roma with a doctorate (laurea magistrale) in jurisprudence and qualified as an avvocatessa (lawyer) and I’m currently the amministratrice delegata (CEO) of Amico Sport Srl, which I co-own with my brother. I love sports, I'm maestra di scherma and coach Olympic fencing, classical Italian fencing, Baroque sword and Villardita-Siciliana (il Nicosioto) and I'm a licensed gun carrier, and competitive shooter.
My other interests include: sex, dance, cooking, shopping, blogging, driving my Maserati, scuba diving, spear fishing, boating, skiing, speed skating, shooting and going to Church.
This is why we should ban guns. There are way too many big angry bozos with guns.

The 1′st bodyguard could easily go down with serious injuries or death .. if the attacker had a real military knife. The attacker could have stabbed him, and also taken out his gun hand with a knife – as the gun was being drawn.
Incidentally, the attacker should have used a distraction tool … like an autograph book, a piece of paper, or a map, in one hand. That makes it even more confusing for the guards. The bodyguards need to contain this person at a longer range from their client.
The second bodyguard is doing his job – getting the client out of the way. But he needs to put himself between the attacker and his client. And he needs to get his weapon drawn the moment he sees a struggle is going down. The client should live through this – even if one of his guards does not.
Bodyguard #1 could be dead from this.
Moral … being a bodyguard can produce a fatal outcome.
Only the sharp survive.
The BG anticipated the attack before it happened and drew his firearm before the knife was even produced because he knew that was supposed to happen in the training exercise. But in a real situation, he wouldn’t know the autograph hunter was an attacker, and if he had draw a firearm on a genuine autograph hunter, he’s in serious trouble. Most the time autograph hunters are just autograph hunters. So he couldn’t do that. What he should have done was intercept the autograph hunter — then assuming the autograph hunter became an attacker — knocked him to the ground. Rob has done that loads of times when he was protecting me. That’s the professional response.
That drill had no realism.
There were lots of other that the BG did wrong too. He would have been stabbed to death, had the attacker played his part with any realism, which is a big fail. He also forgot to follow up the shots to the body with a head shot. The attacker was even worse. Somehow he actually managed to forget to attack, and as soon as he was shot he stopped. He also failed to respond to a clearly visible gun. That’s just silly. A reaction drill doesn’t work if the training partner is a willing accomplice, he has to inject some realism into his role in the drill. He could have made an effort to grab the gun or block the draw at the very least.
As you know, I don’t agree with a gun ban. Actually I think it’s personally and socially irresponsible of you not to own a gun, but I definitely don’t think the BG should have drawn or brandished his gun in that drill. He should have intercepted the autograph hunting before attempting a public assassination.

Well put. A headbutt, tackle or hard shove back would have been more realistic because by the time you saw the knife that’s all you would be able to do. I don’t like putting two shots in to the body like that either. A single shot in the head is more effective and doable at that range.

Stefi and Rob … this is a bit off-topic. But if you have time in the future, I hope you’ll relate some personal info (or experiences) of how criminals are using knives in various parts of Europe. How does the threat actually play out … on the streets of London, Athens, or Madrid? Where are the current “rough places” where knife violence is a threat to the average visitor? That would be some very helpful info – if you know some stories. I’m thinking here of threats to typical tourists and travelers (not high-value targets).
In response, I can share some background I’ve got – on stuff that’s going down in Africa.
cheers,

My thoughts too. There are lots of incompetent fools teaching close protection. These course are a joke and they’re not a route into bodyguarding either.
If you’re unwilling to take steps to defend yourself from attack then you are refusing to take personal responsibility for your own safety, who protects you — the police? — get real — your household and neighbours are you first line of defence. I don’t believe in compulsory gun ownership but if you refuse to own and train in the use of firearms, you’re a bad neighbour. I’m not in favour of large police forces, I would prefer armed vigilantes and local militias.

@ Comrade Buffoon “The world would be a much more just place if everyone were openly armed.”
This blog is turning into a NRA conference. The world would be a much dangerouser place if everyone openly carried guns. We need an outright ban on gun ownership. Lets start with assault rifles then handguns.
Dangerouser isn’t a word but I’m sure it wouldn’t. Ultimately the question is one of civil liberties: we either have the right to defend ourselves or we don’t. The right to defend myself from an attempted rape, kidnapping or murder is dependent on my having the means to defend myself. If I’m denied the means to defend myself, my right to defend myself is meaningless.
